Originally created by Douglas Slain, HempInsider.com aims to continue Mr. Slain’s editorial integrity since its acquisition in 2015 by a group of writers and editors with interests in providing exclusive content within the cannabis and hemp space.
Since early 2014 Douglas Slain has been serving on the investor’s committee of CrowdFund Intermediary Regulatory Advocates (CFIRA), a group of professionals working with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to set standards and establish best practices for practice under Title II, Title III, and Title IV of the JOBS Act.
Slain taught at Stanford Law School as an adjunct clinical law professor. He also served as the secured transaction advisor to the Ministry of Economy for the Republic of Latvia. He has been asked to serve as an expert witness in litigation that turned, in part, on compliance with SEC Regulation D. He manages two blogs, regDconsumersreport.com and regulatepot.com, and two web sites, privateplacementadvisors.com and hempinsider.com. Slain has recently taught an online course on a new asset class called Private Issuers Publicly Raising or PIPR.
Slain founded and owned and operated a legal publishing company, Litigation Research Group, which published monthly law reporting services that identified and analyzed recent appellate decisions of national significance in four areas of the law. He sold this company to McGraw-Hill in 1988; it is currently owned and operated by Thomson-Reuters.
In 2009 Slain launched a monthly law reporting service, Securities Enforcement Reporter, and a quarterly, Blue Sky Chronicle, both titles focusing on the under-reported state hearings of private placements gone astray. These publications’ print versions are no longer extant but their mission and community of interest live on through a growing 1400-member LinkedIn discussion group, State Securities Regulation Discussion Group.
Slain authored the following handbooks in 2012, 2013 and 2014: Crowdfunding in 2014, Crowdfinancing, General Solicitation Under New Rule 506, Crowdfunding on Steroids, Marijuana Money, Business Brokers and Securities Laws, California Real Estate Blind Pools, California Real Estate Exempt Offerings, Hedge Funds for the Rest of Us, How to Finance a Marijuana Business, and Wellness & Cannabis Cookbook.
Slain received a J.D. from Stanford Law School, a M.A. from the University of Chicago’s Social Thought Committee (chaired by Saul Bellow and Hannah Arendt), and a B.A. from DePauw University (Phi Beta Kappa).
